Amazon demonstrates sales spikes in the fourth quarter, when it receives a boost from the holiday shopping season. How this pattern changes over time is worth observing as the e-commerce giant increasingly capitalizes on the artificial intelligence boom. Its Amazon Web Services (AWS) division, under which its AI offerings fall, delivered 37% year-over-year sales growth to $42.2 billion in the second quarter, its fastest growth in 18 quarters in a sign the company’s AI solutions are gaining traction.
Amazon is on a mission to make AI accessible to a broad range of businesses, just as AWS did for cloud computing. It has provided an AI shopping assistant for retailers to adopt, and is using its AI for a budding autonomous vehicle (AV) company called Zoox.
Amazon partnered with Uber in a multi-year deal to bring Zoox into Uber’s ecosystem, starting with Las Vegas this year and Los Angeles in 2027. For its long-term business growth, Uber has made similar deals with other AV enterprises.
However, Uber’s partnership with prominent AV company Waymo, owned by Google parent Alphabet, appears to be ending. Their pilot in Phoenix ended this year with additional cities coming off Uber’s app in the future. This shouldn’t be a big drag on sales given Waymo’s limited involvement in Uber’s ecosystem.
