Pantera Capital Leads .5 Million World Foundation Raise as AI Identity Race Accelerates

    Key Takeaways

    • Pantera Capital led a $52.5 million locked WLD raise for World Foundation on July 24, 2026.
    • Eightco Holdings and Bain Capital Crypto joined as Orb verifications passed 18 million users.
    • World ID 4.0 targets AI agents and enterprises as WLD’s daily emission rate fell 43%.

The nonprofit behind the World protocol, backed by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, announced the new raise on July 24, 2026, three years to the day after the network’s production launch. Pantera Capital led the round. Bain Capital Crypto, Eightco Holdings, Selini Capital, and Susquehanna Crypto also bought in.

Every token sold carries a 12-month lockup. World Foundation said the sale was a direct purchase of market-priced WLD, with no tokens sold on public exchanges.

    Where the Money Goes

The funds will expand World ID for businesses, individual users and artificial intelligence (AI) agents. The foundation is shifting its focus from building out the network to embedding it in the platforms people already use.

The tokens carry no equity, profit rights or ownership stake in Tools for Humanity, the for-profit company that builds the project’s hardware and software. The lockup limits how much new supply can hit the market in the near term.

Onchain data suggested the sale involved about 217 million WLD near $0.24 a token, a discount to the market price of roughly $0.37 at the time. The foundation described the deal as market-priced.

    A Growing Investor Base

The raise follows a $135 million private sale in May 2025 that included A16z and Bain Capital Crypto. Combined with earlier funding, the project’s cumulative capital raised now stands near $492.5 million.

Eightco Holdings already holds about 283 million WLD tokens, close to 8% of the circulating supply, after raising capital for a dedicated WLD treasury strategy. Eightco board member Tom Lee said World’s technology is among the most important tools for verifying human interaction online. Lee’s digital asset treasury (DAT) firm Bitmine also holds a stake in Eightco shares.

Pantera Capital General Partner Cosmo Jiang tied the investment to the rise of AI. He said the need for proof of human verification is becoming clear as enterprise adoption grows around the technology.

    How the System Works

Users verify their identity at a physical Orb, a device that scans the iris and converts the data into a code on the device itself. Cryptographic tools then generate a World ID credential stored on the user’s phone. Apps can check whether someone holds a verified ID without learning their name or location.

World ID 4.0, released this year, adds support for enterprise-scale deployments and lets developers build their own credentials using zero-knowledge proofs. Zoom, Docusign, Okta, Vercel and Tinder have added or announced integrations with the system.

    Network Growth

More than 39 million people have joined the World Network. World claims over 18 million have completed Orb verification, and the network has processed more than 475 million World ID proofs since launch.

That marks growth from May 2025, when the network had about 26 million users and 12.5 million verified humans. The project has also drawn regulatory scrutiny in Spain, Kenya, Brazil, Indonesia, South Korea, Hong Kong, and the Philippines over biometric data collection and consent.

The July 24 announcement also coincided with a scheduled 43% drop in WLD’s daily emission rate. That reduction, paired with the new locked capital, cuts near-term pressure on circulating supply.

    World’s Controversy

At the same time, prosecutors in São Paulo say Tools for Humanity collected iris scans from more than 400,000 people, offering between R$300 and R$700 at booths near metro stations and in low-income neighborhoods. São Paulo officials argue the company continued paying participants even after Brazil’s data protection authority ordered those incentives to stop in 2025. A recently filed lawsuit seeks to permanently block paid biometric collection, force the deletion of the data, and impose R$240 million in damages.

The dispute mirrors legal battles in Kenya, Spain, Portugal, and Germany, where regulators have wrestled with the same question: Can consent truly be voluntary when people are paid to hand over permanent biometric information? World maintains that its cryptographic system anonymizes the resulting digital identity, but that argument has done little to quiet the broader debate.

    What Comes Next

World Foundation operates as an independent nonprofit based in the Cayman Islands, separate from Tools for Humanity. Sam Altman co-founded the World project in 2019 alongside Max Novendstern and Alex Blania. The World Foundation aims for long-term sustainability through protocol fees paid by applications rather than individual users.

Industry estimates from firms including McKinsey and Bain point to trillions of dollars in future agentic commerce, much of it mediated by AI systems acting on behalf of people. That shift is pushing platforms to look for ways to confirm a real person sits behind an account or transaction.

WLD was trading near $0.33 per coin with a market capitalization of about $1.3 billion on Sunday, July 26, 2026, following this week’s announcement. Whether the bet pays off depends on continued enterprise adoption, regulatory outcomes, and how many developers build on top of World ID 4.0.
