In 2024, Heritage Auctions in Dallas got a tip about a stash of vintage games in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, and what followed became the Dallas-Fort Worth Collection: more than 300 factory-sealed and near-mint titles that now sit at the intersection of nostalgia, scarcity, and serious money.

The day Heritage showed up without a map

As reported in April 2024, Heritage sent Cris Bierrenbach, partner at Heritage Auctions, to meet a seller with almost no preview of what was waiting. “After we finally got an appointment to go see the games, we headed over to this gentleman’s place without any idea what we would find, but with high hopes,” he said. Then came the slog of boxes, one after another: “Going through each box and finding each was like a true treasure hunt.”

Two brothers, bulk buys, and decades of patience

The backstory is oddly methodical. Two brothers, already in their 60s when they started in the 1980s, bought hundreds of video games in bulk, often purchasing multiples of the same title, and then left many of them untouched for decades. After they died, the estate sold the games without understanding what sealed condition can mean in this niche market.

A local Dallas-Fort Worth buyer ended up scooping up many of the titles, listing some quickly on eBay. That early activity drew collector attention, and the remaining trove was eventually consigned to Heritage, setting the stage for a more formalized auction pipeline.

Why “sealed” is the whole story

Roughly 90% of the Dallas-Fort Worth Collection was sealed, a rarity for cartridges and boxes that have been around for more than 40 years. The lots included early prints of The Legend of Zelda, Metroid, and Contra for Nintendo’s NES, plus dozens of early Sega titles.

One data point captured the market’s temperature: in March 2024, a first-production 1986 NES Castlevania cartridge sold on eBay for $90,100, then was graded CGC 9.4 A+ as part of this same collection.

Records, pedigree status, and Sega’s share of the spotlight

By April 2024, CGC Video Games said it would recognize the Dallas-Fort Worth Collection as its first “pedigree,” and it later certified nearly 200 games from the find. The headline sale arrived when Heritage’s Video Game Signature Auction ended on August 24, 2024: a sealed, first-production 1987 Zelda graded CGC 9.2 A sold for $375,000, per CGC’s disclosure.

That same sale saw a sealed 1987 Metroid graded CGC 9.6 A+ hit $125,000, while a sealed 1986 Urban Champion graded CGC 9.0 A++ reached $42,500. And this was never just a Nintendo story: the collection also included factory-sealed Sega Master System, Genesis, and Sega CD games, including Castlevania: Bloodlines and Ghouls’n Ghosts. As Valarie Spiegel put it, “The chance to acquire a sealed hangtab variant of Metroid, especially one in such outstanding condition, is extremely rare and likely won’t come around again any time soon.”
