How to compare credit cards before you apply

The credit card features that matter most when comparing a new card include the APR, annual fee, rewards, welcome bonus, intro offers, and benefits. But it’s also important to consider what you can qualify for with your credit score.

Each one of these card features can play a part in the value you get from your card:

    How to compare APRs

As you compare potential new credit cards, check for a link to rates and fees on the issuer’s site. This is where you’ll find the card’s variable APR range. This range tells you where your interest rate may fall, depending on your credit score and other information in your application.

You can check this range against average credit card interest rates. According to the latest Fed data as of September 2026, the average credit card rate is just below 21%. If a credit card’s APR range is well above that average, you should consider that potential cost — especially if you don’t have a great credit score.

But remember, if you don’t carry a balance, you won’t be affected by your card’s APR at all. You can avoid interest charges altogether by paying down your balances in full each month by the due date.

    How to compare annual fees

Annual fees will add to a credit card’s cost, but these fees aren’t necessarily bad.

If you’re considering a card with an annual fee, look at the value of annual credits or added perks like lounge access or complimentary memberships. For some cardholders, that can make the card’s value far outweigh its annual cost.

However, a card with no annual fee can also be a great option. Many cash-back credit cards with solid rewards on everyday spending and balance transfer cards for paying off debt charge no annual fee at all.

    How to compare rewards

Finding the best credit card rewards relies a lot on your individual spending habits. Look back at your spending over the past few months to find where you spend most. If you dine out or order takeout often, for example, you might prioritize dining rewards over grocery rewards. If you take most of your trips by car, you might want great rewards at gas stations instead of on airfare.

You may also want to compare the type of rewards you’ll earn. For savings on travel, points or miles you can redeem toward flights, hotels, and more might be most useful for you. But if simplicity is your goal, cash back that you can redeem toward your credit card statement could be most useful.

    How to compare welcome bonuses

Some welcome bonuses can offer upwards of $1,000 in rewards value — but it’s important to look beyond just the amount of points, miles, or cash-back you can earn.

Also consider the spending requirement to qualify for the welcome bonus. If you must spend $4,000 within three months to earn the bonus but that’s far outside your regular budget, for example, you may want to reconsider or wait and apply for the card when you have a large purchase or upcoming trip.

How to compare a 0% APR introductory offers

When a card offers a 0% APR introductory period, it typically applies to either new purchases or balance transfers. Some cards have 0% APRs on both.

A 0% intro APR for new purchases can be useful for financing upcoming purchases for a period of time. For example, you might use it to purchase new appliances during a home renovation project, then have the intro period to pay them off without interest. Many top 0% APR cards today have intro periods lasting 12 to 15 months. Make sure the intro period you choose gives you enough flexibility to pay down your balance in full before it ends.

A balance transfer 0% APR, on the other hand, is useful for paying down existing debt. When you’re comparing balance transfer cards, look for an intro period long enough to help you pay down your debt balance. Balance transfer cards today have intro periods lasting as long as 21 months. You should also consider the balance transfer fee, which may cost between 3% and 5% of your transferred balance.

How to compare credit card benefits

Annual perks and benefits can vary a lot between cards. Credit cards with no annual fee may have very few added benefits, while high-fee travel cards may have incredibly valuable benefits. For some premium travel cards, the benefits can be worth even more than the rewards.

When you compare credit card benefits, look for credits toward purchases you already make. If you weren’t going to open a subscription or spend with a specific merchant anyway, the benefit may mean very little to you.

Don’t forget to also compare protections and insurance. This includes purchase protections, limited warranties, and travel protections such as rental car coverage and roadside assistance. These may not be benefits that you use often, but they can be extremely valuable when you need them.

Consider what you can qualify for

Beyond what specific credit cards offer, it’s important to compare cards that you have a good chance of qualifying for.

Cards with top rewards and benefits or very long 0% APR intro offers typically require great credit to get approved. If you’re working to improve your credit score or don’t have any credit history at all, you should look for cards designed for building credit — including secured credit cards.

You can also check to see if you prequalify for a card before you apply. Prequalification doesn’t guarantee approval, but it is a good way to see your chances of qualifying without any impact to your credit. Then you can feel more confident when you submit your full application.

    Comparing credit cards side-by-side

Often, a side-by-side look at your top card options can help you make a final decision.

Let’s say you’re looking for a new cash-back credit card that will help you earn rewards on your everyday spending like groceries, gas, and takeout. You don’t want to pay an annual fee and you’d like a card with an introductory 0% APR.

After narrowing down your search, you’re deciding between the Blue Cash Everyday® Card from American Express, the Chase Freedom Unlimited® or the Capital One Savor Rewards Credit Card. You can use our comparison tool to take a closer look at these cards side-by-side:
