Less Than 10 Billionaires Have Actually Kept Their Promise to Give Away Their Fortune

    Key Takeaways

    • The Giving Pledge has 256 signers, but fewer than 10 have fully given away their fortunes.
    • John and Laura Arnold are the only living U.S. couple to fulfill the Giving Pledge after 15 years.
    • Greater Good Charities has delivered $1 billion across 121 countries, showing the scale of the challenge.

When Warren Buffett and Bill and Melinda Gates launched the Giving Pledge in 2010, they challenged billionaires to give away at least half their fortunes. A Fortune report published on March 18, 2026, found that fewer than 10 of the 256 signatories have actually followed through on giving away their wealth, and most of those only did so after death. Among US signatories, Fortune reported that only John and Laura Arnold fully complied with the commitment they signed to give away their fortune. The shortfall is part logistics, part accountability, and, as Elon Musk put it, “It’s very easy to give money away to get the appearance of goodness. It is very difficult to give money away for the reality of goodness. Very difficult.”

A bold promise, and an awkward scorecard

Silicon Valley loves a public commitment, especially when it comes wrapped in moral purpose. The Giving Pledge began in the summer of 2010 as a challenge from Warren Buffett and Bill and Melinda Gates: give at least half your fortune in your lifetime or in your will. Yet when March 18, 2026, rolled around, Fortune reported that fewer than 10 of 256 signers had actually followed through fully.

The detail that sticks is how often “fulfilled” arrives too late to be felt. Most of the billionaires who did keep the pledge only did so after their deaths, Fortune said, a technical win that misses the pledge’s original spirit of giving while you can still learn from it. There’s also a small but telling accounting wrinkle: syndicated versions of the story cite 250 signers rather than 256.

Why giving away billions can be harder than making them

The argument from the tech world’s most visible billionaire is blunt. In 2025, Elon Musk said, “It’s very easy to give money away to get the appearance of goodness. It is very difficult to give money away for the reality of goodness. Very difficult.” The line resonated in Fortune’s reporting because it’s less about generosity and more about execution.

Liz Baker, CEO of Greater Good Charities, agreed, speaking from the operator’s side of the table. “I wish I had a billion dollars to give away, but as somebody who’s responsible for giving away money, yeah, it’s hard, because there’s a really big responsibility that goes with that.” She has led the nonprofit since 2012, and Greater Good Charities has distributed more than $1 billion in impact across 121 countries since 2006.

The one living couple who did it: the Arnolds

If you’re looking for a clean example of the pledge working as advertised, the list is short. Among U.S. signatories, Fortune reported that only John and Laura Arnold fully complied with the commitment they signed while living. A July 2025 report from the Institute for Policy Studies made a similar point, noting that 15 years into the pledge, the Arnolds were the lone living couple among the original 57 signatories to have given away half their wealth (as summarized in a July 2025 report).

    Different paths, same pressure

Not every major philanthropist wanted the pledge’s framing in the first place. George Soros committed $32 billion to philanthropy yet never signed the Giving Pledge, Fortune reported on July 22, 2026. Meanwhile, figures such as MacKenzie Scott are often cited as pursuing alternative, high-velocity giving strategies, a reminder that the tech era’s wealth boom hasn’t produced one shared playbook for what comes next.
