How to use the currency converter

Currency converter for 160+ currencies – MoneysGuide
Convert currencies at the latest reference rates, then check live forex and crypto prices below.
  1. Type the amount you want to convert.
  2. Choose the currency you are converting from and the currency you are converting to. The most-used currencies are listed first, followed by every other currency in alphabetical order.
  3. Your result appears instantly, along with the exchange rate in both directions and a quick table of common amounts.
  4. Use Swap to flip the two currencies.

What is the mid-market rate?

The converter shows the mid-market rate: the midpoint between the prices at which banks buy and sell a currency. It is the fairest reference point, but it is rarely the rate you are offered.

Banks, card providers and exchange counters usually add a margin to this rate, and some also charge a fixed fee. To check whether you are getting a good deal, compare the rate you are offered with the mid-market rate shown here. The closer the two are, the less you are paying in hidden costs.

Tips for getting a better exchange rate

  • Compare before you convert. Rates and fees vary a lot between banks, money transfer services and exchange counters.
  • Avoid airport and hotel exchanges where possible, as their margins are often among the highest.
  • Pay in the local currency when a card machine abroad offers to charge you in your home currency. The conversion offered at the till often includes a poor rate.
  • Watch for fixed fees on small transfers, as they can cost more than the rate itself.

How to read the cross rates table

The cross rates table shows how much one unit of the currency on the left is worth in each currency along the top. Find the currency you hold in the left column, then move across to the currency you want. Prices update during market hours, and green or red shading shows whether a rate has risen or fallen.

Frequently asked questions

How often are the converter's rates updated?

The converter uses reference rates that are refreshed once a day. The cross rates and cryptocurrency tables update more frequently while markets are open.

Why is my bank's rate different?

Banks and payment providers add a margin to the mid-market rate, and some charge a separate fee. The figure here is a reference point, not a quote you can trade at.

Can I convert cryptocurrency here?

The converter covers government-issued currencies. For Bitcoin, Ethereum and other coins, see the cryptocurrency prices table, or use our crypto profit calculator to work out gains and losses on a trade.

Is my data saved?

No. Conversions happen in your browser and nothing you type is stored.

Currency converter tips for travel and online shopping

  • Check the rate before you pay. Compare the rate a shop, card or exchange counter offers with this currency converter. The bigger the gap, the more you're paying in hidden costs.
  • Watch for dynamic currency conversion. When a card machine abroad offers to charge you in your home currency, it usually uses a worse rate. Choose to pay in the local currency instead.
  • Compare money transfer services. For sending money abroad, check both the fee and the exchange rate. A "no fee" service can still cost more through a poor rate.
  • Plan big conversions. Rates move every day. For large amounts, check the rate over a few days rather than converting at the last minute.
