What this pip value calculator does

Pip value calculator for forex and gold – MoneysGuide
Pip value calculator for forex pairs and gold

This pip value calculator shows how much each pip is worth on your trade, in your own account currency. Choose a currency pair or gold (XAU/USD), enter your lot size, and you'll instantly see:

  • the value of 1 pip
  • the value of any price move in pips
  • your position size in your account currency
  • the margin required at your chosen leverage
  • pip values for standard, mini and micro lots

It covers major pairs, popular cross pairs, gold and silver, and converts results into US dollars, euros, pounds and other major currencies using daily reference rates.

How to use it

  1. Instrument: choose the pair or metal you're trading.
  2. Account currency: the currency your trading account is held in.
  3. Trade size: enter lots (1 = standard, 0.1 = mini, 0.01 = micro).
  4. Current price: filled in automatically for currency pairs from the latest reference rate. You can type in the live price from your platform for more precision. For gold and silver, enter the current price per ounce.
  5. Gold pip size: brokers define a gold pip differently ($0.01, $0.10 or $1.00). Choose the one your broker uses.
  6. Units per lot and leverage: standard defaults are filled in. Change them if your broker uses different contract sizes.
  7. Price move: enter a number of pips to see what that move is worth.

How pip value is calculated

Pip value = pip size × units in your position, converted into your account currency.

  • For most pairs, a pip is 0.0001. For pairs quoted in Japanese yen, it's 0.01.
  • One standard lot is 100,000 units of the base currency.
  • For gold, one lot is usually 100 ounces, and the pip size depends on your broker.

Examples with a US dollar account:

  • EUR/USD, 1 lot: 0.0001 × 100,000 = $10 per pip
  • USD/JPY at 150.50, 1 lot: 0.01 × 100,000 ÷ 150.50 ≈ $6.64 per pip
  • XAU/USD, 1 lot (100 oz), $0.01 pip: 0.01 × 100 = $1 per pip. With a $0.10 pip, it's $10.

When the quote currency, the second currency in the pair, isn't your account currency, the calculator converts the pip value at the current exchange rate.

Why pip value matters

Pip value turns price movements into real money. Before you place a trade, it tells you:

  • how much you'll gain or lose if the price moves to your target or stop-loss
  • whether your position size fits your risk limits, for example 1% of your account
  • how quickly losses could build up on a volatile instrument like gold

Our guides to what a pip is in forex, forex lot sizes and 1 pip in gold explain these ideas step by step.

Margin and leverage

The calculator also shows the margin your broker would hold to keep the trade open:

Margin = position size ÷ leverage

For example, 1 lot of gold at $4,000 an ounce controls $400,000 of gold. At 1:100 leverage, that needs about $4,000 of margin. At 1:20, about $20,000. Leverage limits vary by broker and instrument. See our forex margin call example for what happens when margin runs low.

Frequently asked questions

How much is 1 pip worth on EUR/USD?

With a US dollar account, $10 on a standard lot, $1 on a mini lot and $0.10 on a micro lot.

Why is gold pip value different between brokers?

There's no single standard for what a "pip" means on gold. Some brokers use $0.01, others $0.10 or $1.00. The money made or lost on a price move is the same either way.

Does the calculator use live prices?

Currency pairs are filled in from daily reference rates. For exact results, type in the live price from your trading platform.

Can I use it for cross pairs like EUR/GBP?

Yes. The calculator works out the pip value in the quote currency, then converts it to your account currency.

Is my data saved?

No. The calculator runs in your browser, and nothing you enter is stored.
